Vinte e Sete

Mais um filme de animação. Não, animação não, animação é o Shrek. Mais um filme de ficção científica. Um pouco mais que isso, é um filme, mas sem actores. Sem actores, não, com actores. Um pouco como os novos episódios do Guerra das Estrelas (Star Wars). E tem a Sigourney Weaver, e muitos efeitos especiais. Brutais, é impossível distinguir o que são efeitos e o que é mesmo filme. Sabemos que os avatares, e as florestas são efeitos, e os actores são reais. Mas e tudo no meio, serão cenários? Animações sincronizadas?

E o que dizer do melhor 3D que alguma vez viram? Bem, vão ver e julguem por vocês próprios. Se gostaram do senhor dos anéis e da Guerra das Estrelas, vão ficar fascinados com o Avatar de James Cameron. Sim, o enredo é o de um filme de cowboys e índios, mas no planeta Pandora e cem anos no futuro. Não será por aí que este filme vai revolucionar o cinema. Quanto ao resto, junto-me aos que dizem que vai haver um antes e um depois do Avatar.

Are you considering going to see Avatar at the cinema? Have you read mixed reviews about it? Yes, it has been in production since 1994. Yes, the plot is not really complex, more of a western set out in Planet Pandora in a 100 years time. So why is all this fuss about it? Some new special effects? Big deal…

Well, actually you should just forget everything you’ve read and go to see it! And in 3D! The best I have ever seen in 3D. Yes, the storyline is not what will grant it an oscar nomination, but everything else… The music is fantastic, really epic. Then things harder to judge. I really am a big fan of Sigourney Weaver, so my judge on the cast is not impartial. Now. let’s consider “special effects”. Does this filme have CGI? Well, it actually takes it to a whole new level. What are the avatars, are they actors with a lot of make-up? Computer animations mimicking movement from actors? And the robots, did they build the machines, or is it a lot of processing after filming on scenarios? What I can promise you is that in Avatar it is almost impossible to distinguish what is real from what is created. Go and have a look and juge for yourself. I am one of those who believes there will be a before Avatar and an after Avatar.

A técnica usada nestas ilusões é chamada de Scanimotion, está patenteada, e há alguns livros à venda que a usam. Sigam o link para uma explicação com mais pormenor. Não se trata mesmo de uma ilusão, apenas no sentido em que a televisão e o cinema são ilusões. O busílis consiste em criar seis fotogramas, cortá-los em fatias, e dispor as fatias sequencialmente numa única folha. Uma folha com ranhuras de tamanho apropriado, proporcionais às fatias, permite a ilusão ao mostrar um fotograma de cada vez, ou algo assim…

These videos on youtube are based on the animation technique “scanimation” patented by Rufus Butler Seeder. It’s not really an illusion, only in the sense as TV or cinema are also illusion, but  still very interesting. The key is that there are 6 “photograms” cut into slices and arranged on the same sheet. The moving grate allows for only one photogram to be displayed at a time… or something like that.
