(Another) Wonderful and inspiring TED Talk

Um amigo enviou-me um e-mail a dar conta que o iPhone foi considerada a quarta melhor invenção de sempre. Isto veio a propósito de nossas discussões sobre o assunto, em que se oscilava entre a endeusificação do mais sofisticado nível de água de todos os tempos, à hipervalorização de um objecto que nem sequer tem 3G. A minha opinião é que tem um Marketing muito bem conseguido, e quando o tive na mão gostei muito, é um gadget giro, dá para ver fotos e tal, só fica difícil é fazer chamadas. Gostava de ter um, claramente, mas o meu velhinho 6310i da Nokia faz tudo o que eu preciso, até sincroniza com Outlook e Plaxo, e o meu budget para gadgets é curto.

Mas fiquei curioso com quais seriam as invenções cotadas acima do iPhone. O que considerariam vocês o TOP3?

A friend of mine wrote me that the iPhone was considered the fourth best invention of all time. This came after we discussed how a phone without 3G can through excellent marketing become the most sofisticated water level ever. I kind of like it as a gadget, but my old 6310i from Nokia handles all my needs from a phone, it even syncs with Outlook and Plaxo.

While I wait for his reply on which are the three better than iPhone, I ask you the same question. My suppositions are:

3. Code of Laws

Will mobiles still make phone calls?

A câmara municipal do Porto anuncia a criação de uma rede de hotspots gratuita um pouco por toda a cidade. Apoiada numa rede de fibra óptica em crescimento, e numa distribuição wirless até aos vários hotpots, a a estrutura irá servir diversos pontos da cidade. Será fantástico passar a poder consultar a Internet a partir de uma esplanada nos Aliados ou no Jardim do Palácio de Cristal.

Porto inaugurated a free hotspot network covering several places in the city, such as the main avenues, gardens and parks. A mesh of hotspots will be freely available, inter-connected wirelessly on the 5 GHz band (Cisco technology) and supported by a fiber-optic structure.

Google has just announced Android. There will be no Gphone, Google has rather done something even more ambitious. They released a mobile operating system for mobile phones. It covers all basic phone functions such as calling and phone book, but also locates addresses on a map, and has a graphical capabilty to run applications such as Google Earth and Doom (openGL implementation).

They also announced a prize of 10 million $ for the best applications developed for the platform. Curiously they have said nothing about real advanced features such as GPS integration or payment, maybe they should have a look at what is going on on countries like the Netherlands. People there can pay the parking meter by sending an sms, and use GPS integration to locate the nearest on-duty pharmacy.

Mais concretamente desenvolveram produtos que geram ruído electrónico aleatório na gama de frequências em que operam os telemóveis e dispositivos wireless. Sendo ruído aleatório, a sua radiação contraria as emissões estruturadas desses dispositivos. Está provado que a radiação enquanto fonte de calor não provoca danos, mas eventualmente o argumento é que essa estrutura da radiação pode estimular mutações de DNA.

Por outras palavras, este produto protege de um perigo que não se sabe se existe, de um modo que não se sabe se eficaz para garantir essa protecção.

A meu ver está portanto garantido o sucesso. O alvo da companhia é que os fabricantes incorporem estes produtos por forma a garantirem que as companhias de seguro baixem os prémios, pois podem alegar em processos futuros que tudo fizeram ao seu alcance.

If the radiation is not enough to cause thermal damage, it is possible that the structure of the radiation could interfere with the biological activities. E.g. inducing DNA mutations. The random noise could disrupt this structure and thus prevent this danger.

In other words, these products prevent a danger which is not know if exists, by a means that is not sure is effective.

All key elements to success are ensured! Manufacturers who use this products should be able to lever their insurance clauses, as they are protected from future lawsuits since they are trying everything they can...

Nas palavras de um amigo meu, "só não tira cafés". Finalmente um telemóvel que se liga a duas redes diferentes em simultâneo. O preço não é muito simpático, cerca de 500€, e nenhuma operadora o deve incluir em pacotes, mas espero que esta solução se dissemine. Por exemplo é extremamente útil para quem vive na fronteira entre dois países.

Finally it is possible to have a mobile phone connected to two different networks simultaneously. Very useful for those who have a private and work number, or like it used to be the case for me, for those who live near a border, and want to have SIM cards from operators in different countries.
