Mais uma daquelas ideias que parecem um ovo de Colombo. Uma empresa chamada PathIntelligence decidiu fornecer um novo serviço aos donos de superficies comerciais. Localizando os telemóveis dos clientes, e a posição relativa ás antenas instaladas que garantem a existência de rede, permite acumular informação sobre os percursos dos clientes. Em que prateleiras param, se demoram tempo ou não, se passam mais tempo a ver os livros ou à espera na charcutaria.

Não sei até que ponto este tipo de monitorização será permitido à luz da legislação de diferentes países, mas é rápido de perceber que este tipo de informação seria precioso para o Continente, o Jumbo, ou mesmo Zara, C&A, FNAC...

This is another of those tools that really are a Columbus Egg. PathIntelligence is offering a service that allows shop owners to know where their customers spend most time by monitoring their mobile phone network requests. All that is needed is to store the distance to each of the installed antennas, to reap a realm of information. Do customers spend more time looking at new books, or at the butcher's queue.

I wonder if this kind of data colletion conflicts with different countries privacy laws and regulations, but it seems to be a formidable opportunity.

Google has just announced Android. There will be no Gphone, Google has rather done something even more ambitious. They released a mobile operating system for mobile phones. It covers all basic phone functions such as calling and phone book, but also locates addresses on a map, and has a graphical capabilty to run applications such as Google Earth and Doom (openGL implementation).

They also announced a prize of 10 million $ for the best applications developed for the platform. Curiously they have said nothing about real advanced features such as GPS integration or payment, maybe they should have a look at what is going on on countries like the Netherlands. People there can pay the parking meter by sending an sms, and use GPS integration to locate the nearest on-duty pharmacy.
